I watched a really good documentary - made in 2012 - yesterday. Covered the whole issue. From the incursions at the height of the British Empire to date of production - AND IT'S STILL VALID.
The interesting bit is that nearly ALL informed sources (Intelligence and Military) have recommended NOT going in for centuries - but some politicians can't help it. And generally it's down to a fear of not appearing strong. And TOTALLY failing to understand that they wish to be Afghans, not British, Russian or American. And fight for their right to be so (as would ANY nation).
His name is Rory Stewart - google him. He is what you might class as first hand informed. Now a Senior Fellow at Yale - but has credentials that should make you nod (if now bow) with respect.
I will not comment - but his conclusions should make most politicians whinge. I wont say I fully accept ALL his conclusions - but well over 90% are spot on - so I am inclined to respect his better informed opinions than mine can ever be. You can see that despite being diplomatically gifted, he had trouble hiding his disdain for some folk. And I can see why.

Nice to hear Rory invited to speak. Sharia is a very simplistic law - but whether I like it or not - it's not my position in life to force another culture to use it or not. This is NOT, imo, something for which we can lay the blame at one door. It simply shows a general lack of respect from those who choose to be different from us. AGAIN!. And whom we do not understand (or wish to on the whole). It generates fear of the unknown. And that fear is one of the most useful when men with few scruples wish to lead those without the experience to counter them.
