    Starter Getting cleaned

Today I'm taking apart the starter and cleaning it per Sparky 's recommendation in hopes of solving my intermittent issue with starting. There's oil on my Bendix, see attached picture. Is this normal?Click image for larger version

      Just saw this -
      Way to go, Gage!
I sure wished I was that industrious and could bend over to do that kind of work anymore.
Please explain the "I found this:" picture . . .

You should’ve posted something about Trump or Biden and you would’ve got a lot of responses.

What? - can they do starters too?

I enjoy folks on here working on their Rockets and posting pictures. I can't do it myself but I admire you guys that can. Every once in a while I learn something.👍

Sorry - I gave my repair kits to Pepe over here in Spain.

So I already installed a repair kit, and we're looking at the smoked contacts from that kit in the images above. It's still not reliable after the clean up, so I'm out of ideas.

Go with Toyota starter, more powerful and a lot cheaper

There's a thread on other site with part number, but save old nose with gear

Already installed the bigger starter motor (2.4kW I think)

I can't remember (and no longer have an R3 to look at). Is there a capacitor anywhere in the starter solenoid circuit. If there is it could be dead.

I see two things there (I think). One is dirt/oil from the looks of it. But the surfaces look very pitted and that suggests arcing. A dead capacitor could cause it.

It is a bit of a chicken/egg thing - Is the dirt preventing contact - thus arcs. Or is it arcing and this generated debris.

Oil on the bendix depends if the R3 starter gear is in the oiled part of the engine or not. Again my memory is fading.

Sparky had stated that the oil on the Bendix looks normal to him, and I think that makes sense considering the diagrams I've seen of the clutch and flywheel assembly. The surfaces were quite pitted, but I cleaned them up and the problem persists. I've not heard of a capacitor near the starter and haven't made note of one on a wiring diagram, but it would make sense that there's one there, I'll have to do some research on it.

Oil on the gear I would not be overly concerned with...
The contacts should be clean and dry....., not oilly and pitted....
when the contacts are clean and dry, place starter in a vice, wire starter to battery #6 or larger wire,, with a (hot-wire,Red) to positive post of battery(#10 should do)....every time you touch #10 wire to contact on solenoid the starter solenoid should cause the starter gear to jump out and the gear to spin......if that works 50 out of 50 times the starter assembly is GOOD. that then tells you the problem is located in your starter wiring or the three switches...ie: kickstand, clutch, tip over switch...and also starter relay. now the trouble shooting starts....

If you put it on a bench and close the circuit 50 times I would pay attention to how hot the starter and solenoid is getting, granted it isn’t loaded up like it is when it’s turning the motor over but it still takes some juice to actuate the solenoid and spin the starter.
