And if it seems I'm harder on Republicans than Democrats, I'm sure I am, to paraphrase, you can only be hurt by the ones you love.Originally posted by Dr.D View Post

Beggaring your neighbor is America's favorite pastime. We get the politicians we ask for. "What have you done for me?" often determines the outcome of elections. Of course politicians will fall over themselves to reward their supporters and diminish their adversaries. Deficit spending allows them to have the best of both worlds: tax and spend to guide electorate behavior and then delay the costs until they are out of office.
When was the last time you actually saw a debate wherein actual ideas were opined? Questions such as: What is the proper role of government? What does "promote the general welfare" mean? What is the difference between a democracy and a federated republic? Why does it matter? What role does or should deconstructionism have in the Supreme Courts interpretation of the Constitution? If the framers of the Constitution were here today and writing the Constitution, would they pen the same document? Why or why not? How you respond to these questions is informative of the type of person you are and how you might behave as a representative.
You will never see this happen. Candidates stand to lose too much if they say the "wrong" thing. Most journalists, but not all, would be incapable of comprehending fully the questions must less be able to pontificate on the import of candidates' responses. Thus, journalists in general are the very last people to use as a resource when seeking information and soliciting ideas. Yet we have twenty four hour "news" coverage which is entirely about journalists telling us their opinions (journalists interviewing fellow journalists) and masquerading those opinions as information.
