Lee didn’t choose the lead the confederacy over slavery. Lincoln asked him to lead the Union army. He thought about it but decline. He said he could not fight against the home he loved, Virginia - He lead the army over states rights. Slavery wasn’t an issue until Lincoln was about to lose re-election and then inserted it into the political side of the war to get re-elected.
That is when slavery was even brought up as an issue
