    Tire damage, what caused it?

Will the younger son just sent me this picture of the rear tire on his T-Bird asking me what might have caused it. I said it looks like you may have locked it up, his response was he couldn’t if he tried, he has ABS. What do you think guys?

I can't imagine, in one spot like that, except for a lock up.

I think he did in fact lock it up in a sense as he hit some loose dirt or gravel causing it to 'slide' over said dirt/gravel and cause this spot as he was stopping hard. That would cause the loss of traction and a spot on the tire. On the other hand if he was slowing down in a hurry and downshifted into a lower gear than he should have been and popped the clutch it would cause the tire to slow drastically causing the slight rash on the tire from engine breaking. 👍 Or he hit a Chipmunk.

This is the son that with less than a year under his belt on a big bike kept pace with Wyldchild & Claviger at Leakey, he has got some skills, but it doesn’t matter where the limit is on anything he is pushing it. So, I think you’re right, I think he was probably playing with or testing the ABS. I ask him if he had done any hard braking recently...”No dad, for the last 6 months I’ve been very careful”🙄🙄 Do you remember wondering if your parents were mind readers, and how they knew stuff you didn’t tell them about?

My dad never complained about me riding wild, or pushing limits, because I learned it from him.

Yea well, I’ll admit I haven’t been the model for conservative riding either,so I’ll own up to part of what causes it

I have abs on my victory and have locked the brake on hard braking

And I wonder about that, I’ve got oversized tires on my F350, it doesn’t like them, it throws ABS codes and occasionally locks one wheel and other weird shit on hard braking. I’m not sure the ABS stuff is as cut and dried as we are lead to believe.

It could be a defect in the tire.

I would take a good long slow look. There appears to be a small cut/slit/gash in the tread "gully".
And how old is the tyre? -

We put it on last summer, is there a date code?

Must be - it is a requirement of law.

It's hard to tell with a small screen, poor-ish resolution and dodgy eyes, but there seem to be some weird marks there - Has he ridden over any glass or metal swarf?

Hard to know what he may have ridden over, I’ll ask

My k1200 has linked abs, but hard downshifting while braking will chirp the back tire, fwiw

And that seems to be the culprit here. It's also true you can lock up the ABS for a nano second but enough to leave a skid mark if the brakes were applied over any imperfection in the roadway.

I think he was probably out there rubbing on it with sandpaper.
