I really hate our jacked up tax system but ive got a question for you old timers.

when i got divorced i agreed to pay off our tax debt. $12k later i paid it off earlier this year. I actuallu over paid them $500 and so they sent that overpayment to ga dept of rev because i owed the state like $100 still. The state turns around and mails me a check for the remainder made out to me and my ex.

Should I just toss it in the trash as my ex isnt going to sign off on crap?

The $ is not worth the forgery risk. Toss in a drawer just in case the ex wises up.

Call them and explain situation. See if they will stop payment on, and cancel that check then reissue a new one to you only since you’re the only one who overpaid them
