    Motorcycle tires

    Short article on new technology

Good article and I agree in basis; however, some brands of motors do NOT agree with some brands of tire - IMHO.
I have run Metzeler tires on other motors with success. They absolutely SUCK on the rear of a Rocket Roadster! Triumph must have been offered a super deal for OEM tires from Metzeler.
I wish I knew exactly why but I am not the only that has experienced unexplained step out from the rear at slow to average speed negotiating a sharp slow speed corner.

My browser blocked the link so I couldn't see the article, but I agree that Metz tires sux!

Tried a set on a HD and the only other set came stock on the R3T. Wasn't impressed with either .

FWIW - I have had Metzlers on loads of bikes over the years - mostly Italian. Never been happy. They do apparently suit BMW but I don't like the way BMWs ride either.

I recall reading some VERY good info on the R3 spec Metzlers from an Austrian main Metzler dealer many many years back. The V rated 240/50R16 is IDENTICAL to the H rated one. It's just a VERY solid H rated tyre that exceeds V rated testing. So it heats up very fast and does not shed heat. Thus the R3 torque and weight shreds it. That said I have ridden the R3 on iced over roads using the original Me's and they griped!.

Right now - I would run Continentals or Michelin if I could. I think at next tyre change for the R3 (if I still have it when that time comes) I'll try the Avon Cobra Chrome.

Its funny when i had my suzuki everyone swore by metzlers and detested avons. Now the shoe is on the other foot. I never had a problem with the metz on the rocket nor have I had a problem with the avons on the bike now. Maybe you guys just push it harder than me šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I reckon it to be more of a lean angle issue and poor traction when the center mass is moved away from the contact patch.
Metzelers worked fine for me on motors (V2K) with reduced lean
                      angle.

It was noticeable that in Germany the choice was split North/South. PRE COBRA CHROME.

North preferred Metzler - South preferred Avon.

I am by no means a "quick" rider - I accelerate fairly mildly, but I will run at 90mph-ish all day. And on motorway this means in curves too. And I do mean - Fill up - motorway at 90 until I need to fill up again - 200ish kms no stops no rests - Fillup - repeat until reaching destination.

One ride in 40°C at a fair constant pace - long sweeping bends and aggressive tarmac took 1mm of profile off the tread and turned an Avon Cobra front blue. The rear was at that time a Darkside.

That's when I went to the Avon Azaro (sadly no more) on the front. And rear E-Max.

A big issue with such a disparity of widths is CROWN PROFILE. Exacerbated by the Metz front being a "pinch" fit on the rim. This was actually published by Metzler(USA) and quickly removed once commented upon.

Fitting a rear tyre to the front will always be a pinch fit - so it's not always an issue.
