A plea for R-III Technical advice.

Hi Guys. It's been ages since I had a Rocket and more still since I frequented any tech forum.

But as we have one or two tech gods here - well it's the place for me to ask.

A mate here has an early-ish Rocket. 2007 iirc. He cannot speak English really and the local owner base here is really small.

He's suddenly noticed an odd noise on the Left side somewhere near his foot ( maybe a bit rearwards of foot)- he says it sounds like the needle on an old vinyl record jumping. Happens accelerating in 2nd gear in preparedness for changing up to 3rd. And sometimes in 3rd.

Any ideas what it could be? - He thinks Drive Shaft (or could it be the infamous reversed oil seal).

I have not heard it personally (yet!) - but I can't remember what mine sounded like and I always ride with earplugs anyway.

I have to ask is it a black or silver motor. The 07 classic tourer had silver motors.
Which could mean different clutches between the two. Now both were subject to the front torsional damper bearings being installed backwards. If I was worried about one I would drop the oils sump pan during a oil change. Or drain in clean pan then drop the oil sump pan. If there is a problem with the damper bearings you'll see the debris in the sump pan. The gasket is about 15 bucks the last time I bought one. Even if you find no debris it's worth it to clean the sump screens.
now if the noise is in front of the left foot check clutch freeplay. If it has the older style pressure plate you might be loosing the needle style thrust/thro-out bearing in the pressure plate.
also see of the sound is there when your not running the motor and you actuate the clutch lever to make sure you lifter shaft bearing is not dry it's a needle roller style too and might be rolling dry.

that's about all I got for now. I'll ponder on it a while and post if I think of something else.

Thank you - Oh great one. Black motor. I have to pop over and see Pepe as he dropped it last week. But my first thought was the Clutch freeplay too.
